New York Assembly Passes Aid-in-Dying Bill, Eyes Now on Senate

A.136, a bill that would allow terminally ill New Yorkers the right to seek medical aid in dying, passed two committees and the full Assembly this week, marking a major milestone for supporters of end-of-life options.

The legislation, long championed by advocacy groups, now moves to the Senate, where it faces a tougher battle.

“This has been a long-sought victory,” said Mandi Zucker, Executive Director of End of Life Choices New York. “But we know the road ahead is even steeper.”

While the Assembly passage is being celebrated, Zucker emphasized that the bill does not yet have the votes to pass in the Senate. The final step after Senate approval would be the Governor’s signature. Advocates remain hopeful but acknowledge the uphill nature of the fight.
